BMV080 is the world’s smallest particulate matter PM 2.5 air quality sensor available in the market.

The particulate matter sensor is suitable for use in ultra-compact wearable and IoT devices such as air quality monitors, smart air purifiers, etc.

The BMV080 is the smallest PM 2.5 air quality sensor. The sensing element of BMV080 measures only 4.2 x 3.5 x 3 mm³ (W x L x H), which is more than 450 times smaller than any comparable device on the market. Moreover, the BMV080 applies sophisticated algorithms to measure the PM2.5 concentration directly in free space, without requiring a fan. The BMV080 is also a maintenance-free sensor as it doesn’t requires fans, thus reducing dust built-up, making it more reliable, compact and less prone to malfunction. The particulate matter sensor is suitable for use in ultra-compact wearable and IoT devices such as air quality monitors, smart thermostats, smart speakers, smart switches, smart air purifiers, etc.

Measuring PM2.5 is essential because these fine particles can have serious impacts on human health. Due to their small size, PM2.5 particles can penetrate deep into the lungs and even enter the bloodstream, leading to a range of health problems such as asthma, lung cancer, and heart disease. There are different kinds of sensors available in the market that can detect and measure PM 2.5 in the air, some of the sensors includes MEMS sensors, electromechanical sensor, optical sensors, laser sensor, ionic sensor, etc. All the sensors have their own advantages and disadvantages and these sensors need to be calibrated properly before they are employed for the measurement applications.

The BMV080 sensor uses an innovative design based on ultra-compact lasers with integrated photodiodes. The sensor can easily be integrated into ultra-compact IoT-based smart home and smart building systems to deliver air quality notifications to residents when PM2.5 levels rise above a threshold level. To act, the resident or home automation system can ventilate, or switch on an exhaust fan or filter to clear the air.
