Rohde & Schwarz revolutionise radar testing systems for the rapidly advancing autonomous vehicle industry by unveiling options for its  R&S AREG800A automotive radar echo generator and the R&S QAT100 antenna array. Taking innovation in radar testing to newer heights, this system simulates comprehensive driving scenarios to rigorously test radar-based advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and radar sensors integral in automated driving (AD) cars, fully over the air. This upgrade heralds a future where autonomous braking tests reach unmatched realism, achieved by generating exceedingly short distances for artificial objects. The key features include:

  • Overhaul introduces significant improvements.
  • Instantaneous bandwidth increased from 4 GHz to 5 GHz
  • Utilizes mmW remote frontends R&S AREG8-81S/D
  • Enhanced distance resolution in automotive radar applications
  • Offers a resilient and future-proof solution
  • Enables users to leverage higher bandwidth for detailed radar assessments

The revamped Radar Test System (RTS) emerges as the tool for radar object simulation, encapsulating single sensor trials to immersive 360° environments, and specifically catering to the 76-81 GHz bandwidth pivotal for automotive radar sensors. The RTS promises scalability and embodies adaptability, facilitating a vast array of electronically generated ADAS traffic scenarios throughout the testing lifecycle. At the heart of this revolution is the synergy between the backend powerhouse of these two devices. This duo is an indomitable force in benchtop development, Hardware-in-the-Loop, and Vehicle-in-the-Loop applications. Transitioning to production, the R&S AREG8-24/81S/D antenna steps in as the front-end component, amplifying flexibility and scalability like never before.

It brings to the table highly precise simulations of moving objects. This feature facilitates the reduction of minimum distances to artificial objects, shrinking it to the radar’s airgap value under testing conditions. Complementing this is the newly introduced option R&S QAT-B1 enhanced flatness for the R&S QAT100. This upgrade accentuates the amplitude flatness accuracy of all antennas, magnifying precision when paired with the new devices.

The company claims that the system is a beacon of innovation, allowing a seamless transition of real-world test drives to laboratory settings. This not only anticipates errors at an embryonic stage but is a harbinger of substantial cost savings, propelling the industry forward with adeptness and foresight.
