The series of power inductors is designed to improve battery life in wearable devices like earphones, hearing aids, smartwatches, and small power supply modules.
TDK Corporation has launched its new PLEA85 series of power inductors, designed to enhance the operating times of battery-powered wearables and other devices. The company claims the series is notable for its industry-leading low profile, achieved through TDK’s innovative low-loss magnetic material and advanced thin-film processing techniques. The main applications of these components are in wearable devices such as true wireless stereo (TWS) earphones, hearing aids, smartwatches, and small-sized power supply modules.
The PLEA85 series of power inductors, with dimensions of 1.0 mm (L) x 0.8 mm (W) x 0.55 mm (H), enables product size reduction while optimizing for low-profile integrated circuits like CSP. Its design includes a bottom electrode and a partly L-shaped form, enhancing its suitability for high-density surface mounting and reducing assembly errors, thereby increasing terminal strength for a more durable product. These inductors use proprietary low-loss metal magnetic material, leading to highly efficient power circuits. The series is tailored for modules housing lower-profile ICs, catering to compact and efficient electronic design needs.
Some of the key specifications of the power inductors include:
- LMeasuring frequency: 1.0 MHz
- Tolerance: ±20%
- Operating temperature range: –40 to +125 °C
- Storage temperature range: –40 to +85 °C
- Individual weight: 2.4 mg
With the expected development of wearable devices that offer greater performance and density, the demand for smaller, lighter, and thinner electronic components is set to rise. TDK plans to expand its range of small, high-efficiency, low-profile inductors, which are essential components in power circuits, to meet these emerging market demands.
