Role
As a hardware design engineer at KaleidEO, you will be working with partners and vendors towards the design and development of electronics which will be used to operate an innovative payload/camera design that will be used in space. You will collaborate closely with partners to ensure that the hardware aligns with our system-level requirements and operates optimally in the challenging space environment.
It will require a close working relationship with firmware engineers, satellite/payload system engineers, and other stakeholders to design, build, test, and troubleshoot new complex systems to make them work in space.
Responsibilities
- Gather, define, and document hardware requirements to meet existing and anticipated needs for payload electronics.
- Collaborate with system architects and project managers to define hardware requirements and specifications based on mission objectives.
- Develop, analyze, and review data to validate and verify the system meets specifications and design requirements.
- Design and verification of schematics, block diagrams, and layouts for payload electronic PCBs.
- Choose appropriate components, considering factors such as radiation tolerance, power efficiency, heritage, and mission requirements.
- Work closely with partners for building and testing prototypes to validate hardware designs and troubleshoot issues.
- Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including FPGA designers, firmware engineers, and system engineers to test and integrate the hardware.
Requirements
General Requirements:
- Scrappy and thinking outside the box to be comfortable working with a high degree of ambiguity. You will be working on something that has never been done before.
- Prepared to be challenged and work out of your comfort zone.
- High sense of ownership, urgency, and drive; resourceful, and able to deliver results with minimal direction.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and verbal and written communication skills.
Basic Qualification and Skills
- Bachelor’s experience of 5 years or Masters in a relevant field with 3 years of experience.
- Experience of high-speed digital, low-noise analog, and high-reliability design practices; in terms of schematics, PCB layout, and test and measurement.
- Design of FPGA-based digital boards such as Xilinx, Microchip, and Microsemi.
- Knowledge of various communication protocols (e.g. CAN, SPI, UART, I2C).
- Basic knowledge of embedded programming in C/C++, understanding of FPGA programming workflow.
- Hands-on experience of simulation on SPICE and hardware prototyping. Proficiency in electronic design software tools – Altium, OrCAD.
- Operating knowledge of laboratory equipment such as oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, etc.
- Understanding of Linear Integrated Circuits (Opamps, regulators, amplifiers, DC-DC converters, ADCs-DACs, filters, etc.)
- Experience working on multiple stages of the product development lifecycle (project initiation, design completion, release, and maintenance with version control).
Preferred Qualification and Skills
- Basic understanding of multiple domains related to satellite engineering. Such as satellite onboard avionics systems, imaging sensors, and data acquisition systems.
- Knowledge of space-qualified FPGAs and radiation-hardening techniques is highly desirable.
- Basic understanding of VHDL.
- Space grade component and part selection knowledge. Experience with fault management, FDIR, and redundant systems.
Education Qualification
- Bachelor in Electronics Engineering/equivalent, Or Master in relevant field
