CMOS Global Shutter Sensors For Advanced Machine Vision

These sensors are engineered to meet the demanding requirements of precise and efficient imaging in dynamic environments, where clarity and accuracy are paramount. 

OMNIVISION introduces two CMOS global shutter (GS) image sensors tailored for the burgeoning machine vision sector. The unveiling is part of a strategic expansion with establishing the new Machine Vision Unit dedicated to advancing technologies for industrial automation, robotics, logistics barcode scanners, and intelligent transportation systems.

The newly launched sensors are the smallest-ever 2.2-micron backside-illuminated (BSI) pixel, setting a new standard for high-resolution imaging in compact formats. These state-of-the-art GS sensors are optimized to capture fast-moving objects with unparalleled clarity and precision at high frame rates, marking them as the most efficient shutters currently available. Their design emphasizes high sensitivity, minimal noise, and superior near-infrared (NIR) quantum efficiency (QE), ensuring exceptional performance even in low-light conditions.

The features include:

  • Sensors exhibit up to 2.16x increased sensitivity with an F1.4 lens compared to previous 2.5µm FSI models.
  • Resolution: 5 and 1.5 -megapixel
  • Optical Format: 1/2.53-inch and More compact at 1/4.51-inch

Michael Wu, OMNIVISION’s Senior Vice President of Global Sales and Marketing, expressed enthusiasm about the market’s robust demand for sophisticated 3D cameras and CMOS sensors. He emphasized that the Machine Vision Unit would prioritize customer-centric innovations by aligning closely with their needs and developmental trajectories.

Both sensors incorporate the company’s technologies, including Nyxel NIR technology that enhances QE across 700-1050nm wavelengths, PureCelPlus-S stacked-die architecture for peak performance, and compact CSP package technology. The OG05B1B features a 5-megapixel resolution, 60fps frame rate, and high 106 dB shutter efficiency. The OG01H1B boasts a 1.5-megapixel resolution, rapid 120fps frame rate, and equivalent high shutter efficiency. Each sensor supports a 4-lane MIPI & DVP interface and includes an external trigger snapshot mode, significantly refining exposure control and image accuracy. These features collectively make these new offerings a formidable choice for high-end machine vision applications.
