TDK Corporation has expanded its Flexield family of permalloy thin film sheets with the new IPM01 series. This series features high permeability and loss in a lightweight and 0.006 mm ultra-thin design. The new material effectively shields low-frequency band noise, addressing a growing issue in electric vehicles (EVs). electronic subsystems in gas-powered automobiles generate high-frequency noise measured in megahertz (MHz). While integrating these subsystems, EVs eliminate internal combustion engines and replace them with electric motors and inverters generating lower-frequency noise in the kilohertz (kHz) range. Conventional noise suppression for the kHz band requires bulky and heavy shielding materials, unsuitable for EVs, where size and weight are critical.

Beyond the automotive market, the new permalloy material applies to other electronic equipment, which is becoming smaller, thinner, and more multifunctional. Smartphones and other devices increasingly require noise suppression. The permalloy sheet developed by TDK can suppress noise at 1/5 the thickness of conventional products. The IPM01 series in the Flexield family is available as sheet material and in custom shapes. TDK will continue contributing to market needs by providing roll products and expanding its lineup of high-temperature types.
The series is designed for use in automotive subsystems, as well as in smartphones and wearable devices. The ultra-thin film, with a sheet thickness of 0.006 mm, allows for application without increasing weight or space. It offers an 80% reduction in thickness, a 90% reduction in weight, and a +65% shielding effect at 1MHz compared to conventional products. The high permeability (permeability below 1MHz: Typ. 1000) ensures high noise absorption, while the material’s good shielding characteristics cover a wide bandpass from low to high frequencies. The conductive permalloy alloy surface enhances the noise suppression effect through grounding. Options for conductive or non-conductive double-sided tape are available, and the company provides sheet materials and custom cuts to meet various customer needs.
