The processors will enhance PCs globally, boosting AI capabilities and optimizing Copilot+ features like Recall with future updates.
Intel is set to launch the client processors, known as Lunar Lak, in Q3 2024. This rollout will significantly enhance AI capabilities for Copilot+ PCs globally. The processors will initially support Copilot+ features like Recall through subsequent updates.
The AI PC architecture includes a central processing unit (CPU), a graphics processing unit (GPU), and a neural processing unit (NPU), each engineered to accelerate specific AI tasks. The NPU is specially designed to process AI and machine learning tasks directly on the device, reducing reliance on cloud processing. This capability is increasingly critical as PCs are called on to automate and optimise various tasks.
“With breakthrough power efficiency, the trusted compatibility of the x86 architecture and the industry’s deepest catalogue of software enablement across the CPU, GPU and NPU, we will deliver the most competitive joint client hardware and software offering in our history with Lunar Lake and Copilot+,” Michelle Johnston Holthaus, Intel executive vice president and general manager of the Client Computing Group.
The company claims that the new processor can redefine AI capabilities in mobile processors, offering more than three times the AI performance of its predecessors. With over 40 NPU tera operations per second (TOPS) and more than 60 GPU TOPS, Lunar Lake will deliver a combined platform capability of over 100 TOPS, essential for powering the forthcoming Copilot+ experiences.
“The launch of Lunar Lake will bring meaningful fundamental improvements across security, battery life, and more thanks to our deep co-engineering partnership with Intel. We are excited to see Lunar Lake come to market with a 40+ TOPS NPU, which will deliver Microsoft’s Copilot+ experiences at scale when available,” said Pavan Davuluri, corporate vice president of Windows + Devices at Microsoft.
