The increasing concern over plastic consumption due to its environmental impact has led to innovative solutions and widespread changes. People are becoming more aware of the adverse effects of plastic on climate and ecosystems, prompting a shift away from products like plastic bottles. Although the industry has introduced graded plastics that are more acceptable due to recycling potential, the manufacturing process still poses environmental risks. This awareness is especially pronounced among individuals travelling to remote locations or living in urban areas without advanced water purification systems. These individuals often resort to boiling tap water or storing it in open containers, which raises concerns about bacterial and viral contamination.

In response to these challenges, Het Dave, an MDes student at Anant National University, conceptualised and designed “IRA – A UV Water Bottle” under the guidance of Professor Parth Shah. After conducting primary and secondary research and examining existing technologies, they conceptualised a compact solution utilising UV-C light technology. This technology effectively disrupts the DNA of harmful microorganisms, ensuring water safety. They designed a glass bottle with a UV-C light circuit and developed and tested a prototype that seamlessly integrates this technology into a user-friendly design.

They claim the bottle not only purifies water but also aims to reduce reliance on single-use plastics by offering a reusable solution that meets everyday needs while being environmentally responsible. This development process involved extensive research and design iterations, including circuit design that accommodates a UV-C light, rechargeable batteries, and electronic controls within the confined space of a bottle.

The electronics were meticulously planned to ensure efficiency and durability, utilising available components like LiPo batteries and standardised UV-C lamps. We are currently in the prototype stage, with plans to add multifunctional features such as a Bluetooth speaker, enhancing the product’s appeal to a tech-savvy, health-conscious audience. This approach not only addresses environmental concerns but also caters to the lifestyle needs of modern consumers, demonstrating a step towards more sustainable living solutions.
