The controller enables compact, fast, power-efficient 4K UHD projectors, achieving quality images and gaming with minimal lag.
Texas Instruments (TI) has launched a new display controller that is set to change the projector market by enabling small, fast, and power-efficient 4K ultra-high-definition (UHD) projectors. The DLPC8445 display controller measures 9mm by 9mm, about the size of a pencil eraser, making it the smallest controller in its class. It supports 100-inch diagonal displays, delivering quality images with low latency.
Integrating the display controller with the digital micromirror device (DMD) and a power-management integrated circuit (PMIC) with an LED driver enables designers to create projectors that compare with high-end televisions and gaming monitors regarding the display experience. This innovation is designed to build compact projector designs that maintain performance and serve the needs of both entertainment and professional presentation environments.
Lifestyle and gaming projectors are becoming popular as consumers seek more engaging ways to enjoy movies, games, and TV shows. The latest display controller and digital micromirror device (DMD) enable designers to create displays with sub millisecond latency, matching even the top gaming monitors and reducing gamers’ lag. This technological advancement ensures a smooth and responsive gaming experience.
Additionally, the integration of Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) technology, a new feature for DLP chipsets, improves display performance for gaming. This allows designers to synchronize frame rates effectively, addressing lagging, image tearing, and stuttering issues. The controller also includes image-correction technology that adjusts for surface imperfections, allowing users to game or watch content from almost anywhere. It introduces the first DLP controller explicitly designed for laser-illuminated, battery-powered projectors.
“Immersive display entertainment is now sought out by everyday consumers, not just movie enthusiasts and gamers,” said Jeff Marsh, vice president and general manager of DLP Products at TI. “Where consumers once needed a big TV or monitor for a crisp and clear display, they can now use a lifestyle or gaming projector and transform a wall into the screen size of their choosing with 4K UHD quality.”
