With new transceivers supporting high-speed networks and extended cable reach, SPE solutions are now being adopted in diverse applications from robotics to automation, providing robust, energy-efficient, and standards-compliant networking capabilities.
The automotive and industrial sectors are increasingly adopting Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) solutions for network connectivity due to their benefits in reducing cost, weight, and cable complexity. SPE, initially proven effective in automotive applications, is now being utilised in other areas such as avionics, robotics, and automation. Microchip Technology has expanded its SPE offerings with the introduction of the LAN887x Ethernet PHY transceivers. These transceivers support network speeds from 100 Mbps to 1000 Mbps, using 1000BASE-T1 standards, and offer cable lengths up to 40m for extended reach.
The key features include:
- Supports Type A operation with cable lengths up to 15 meters
- Supports Type B operation for extended cable lengths up to 40 meters
- Each operation type includes four inline connectors
- Capable of data transmission speeds ranging from 10 Mbps to 1000 Mbps
The transceivers are fully compliant with industry standards IEEE 802.3bp for 1000BASE-T1 and IEEE 802bw-2015 for 100BASE-T1, ensuring interoperability across various industries. The company has collaborated with the University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL) to develop a test platform for 1000BASE-T1 conformance. These devices are designed to meet the needs of automotive and industrial applications operating in challenging environments and are ISO 26262 functional safety ready with ASIL B classification. These transceivers offer advanced diagnostics, including cable fault detection, signal quality indicators, link status monitoring, built-in self-tests, and temperature and voltage monitoring.
The series is an energy-efficient solution incorporating EtherGREEN technology, which helps reduce power consumption. The OPEN Alliance TC10 Sleep and Wakeup feature further conserves power, with a maximum standby consumption of 16 µA, making it suitable for battery-powered applications. An optional integrated linear regulator simplifies design by reducing component count. The devices are compatible with its extensive range of microcontrollers (MCUs), microprocessors (MPUs), System-on-Chip (SoC) devices, and Ethernet switches. The company offers a growing selection of SPE solutions, including PHYs, controllers, and switches. The family is supported by a range of development tools, including hardware evaluation platforms and software drivers.
