The SmartEgg single-stage PFC and isolated regulation design achieves peak efficiency exceeding 95% while minimizing the bill of materials (BOM).

Eggtronic has introduced a new evaluation board (EVB) designed to streamline the development process and optimize the design of 240W Power Delivery (PD) 3.1 applications. This EVB, known as the SmartEgg 240W PD 3.1, is engineered to reduce both the size and cost of high-power charging solutions, while also enhancing efficiency to support ultra-fast charging. The EVB achieves peak efficiency rates exceeding 95% and maintains over 90% efficiency across the entire load range, from light to full load. This high efficiency is enabled by a single-stage design that integrates zero voltage switching (ZVS) power factor correction (PFC) with quasi-forward isolated regulation. This approach allows for a significant reduction in the bill of materials (BOM) and the size of critical components such as storage capacitors and magnetics, in comparison to traditional PFC+LLC and PFC+Asymmetric Half-Bridge (AHB) architectures. As a result, the platform offers up to 50% energy savings at light loads, a power density of 21.9W/in³ (1.34W/cm³), and substantial BOM cost reductions.

The key features include:

  • Very efficient in light load and no load conditions
  • Quasi-forward Transformer for reduced size of the magnetics
  • Undervoltage, Overvoltage, Overcurrent, Overtemperature protections
  • Single-stage PFC + isolated regulation
  • Synchronous Rectification

At the core of this EVB is Eggtronic’s SmartEgg AC/DC architecture, which leverages the proprietary EPIC (Eggtronic Power Integrated Controller) 2.0 IC. Based on a 32-bit RISC-V core, this controller is equipped with a comprehensive set of digital and analog peripherals, offering robust protection features, including safeguards against overpower, overvoltage, overtemperature, short circuits, and brownouts. The flexible internal structure of the EPIC controller supports multiple independent control loops, enabling compatibility with both standard and proprietary power conversion architectures.

The EVB’s dual-port design is highly adaptable, allowing engineers to modify the board for various charging port configurations. The EPIC 2.0 controller facilitates power distribution across multiple ports, with the ability to allocate power dynamically through I2C communication, making the power-sharing behavior customizable to specific application needs.
