Lead-Free FPGAs Achieve QML Class V Certification

These FPGAs are optimized for human-rated missions, deep space exploration, and national security programs, offering high performance, low power consumption, and immunity to radiation-induced configuration upsets.

Microchip Technology Inc.has announced that its Radiation-Tolerant (RT) RTG4 Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) with lead-free flip-chip bumps have achieved Qualified Manufacturers List (QML) Class V status. This certification, awarded by the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), represents the highest standard for space-grade components, meeting mission-critical requirements for applications such as human-rated spaceflight, deep space exploration, and national security programs.  

This certification ensures that components meet stringent performance and reliability benchmarks, streamlining design and qualification processes for customers involved in space missions. The FPGAs, which first achieved QML Class V status in 2018, remain at the forefront of the industry by introducing the next generation of these devices with lead-free flip-chip bumps, setting a new standard for reliability and longevity.

The key features are:

  • Passed QML Class V certification tests.  
  • Endured 2,000 thermal cycles from −65°C to 150°C.  
  • Met MIL-PRF-38535 reliability standards.  
  • Showed no signs of tin whiskers.  
  • Fully compatible with existing assembly and thermal processes.  

The lead-free flip-chip construction enhances product durability by connecting the silicon die to the package substrate using bump technology. This advancement helps extend the lifecycle of space hardware, essential for long-duration missions. Designed for the challenges of space environments, RTG4 FPGAs combine high density and low power consumption, reducing engineering complexity and overall costs. Unlike SRAM-based alternatives, RTG4’s non-volatile architecture ensures immunity to radiation-induced configuration upsets, eliminating the need for costly mitigation strategies.  

The company’s space portfolio also includes QML Class Q RT PolarFire FPGAs and sub-QML solutions, bridging the gap between QML-certified components and commercial offerings. Development tools such as the Libero SoC Design Suite and dedicated hardware kits support the RTG4 FPGAs, facilitating testing and validation.  “Achieving this milestone reinforces our commitment to delivering high-reliability, zero-configuration-upset FPGAs with low power consumption for space systems,” said Bruce Weyer, corporate vice president of Microchip’s FPGA business unit.
