Toshiba has introduced an automotive-grade photorelay ‘TLX9150M’ engineered for high-voltage battery management systems (BMS) in electric vehicles (EVs). Designed for 400V EV battery systems, it withstands up to 900V, ensuring reliability and safety under demanding conditions. With its compact SO12L-T package (measuring 7.76×10.0x2.45 mm), this photorelay is 25% smaller than Toshiba’s previous models, allowing efficient space utilisation in EV battery systems while meeting high voltage isolation requirements.

As EV demand surges, high-capacity batteries with enhanced charging and cruising capabilities are essential. This photorelay optimises battery performance, contributing to EVs with longer ranges and efficient energy use. Targeting automotive equipment manufacturers, OEMs, and system integrators, this photorelay’s robust design provides crucial voltage isolation, helping manage and protect high-voltage BMS applications. It is particularly suited for those developing reliable, high-performance EV battery systems to handle higher power levels safely.

Key features of this photorelay include a minimum output withstand voltage of 900V and a high isolation voltage of 5000Vrms (root mean square voltage), offering strong protection against electrical faults. Its 1-Form-A normally open configuration and avalanche current rating of 0.6mA enhance its reliability, positioning it as a strong alternative to traditional mechanical relays in high-voltage applications like battery voltage monitoring and ground fault detection. Further, it’s AEC-Q101 qualification and IEC 60664-1 compliance ensure it meets automotive standards for durability and performance, further appealing to the industry’s rigorous quality requirements.
