They deliver precise vehicle dynamics data for critical automotive safety functions, supporting ADAS features and meeting stringent ASIL D safety standards.
TDK Corporation introduces the SmartAutomotive IAM-20685HP and IAM-20689, the latest second-generation 6-axis MEMS IMUs designed for automotive safety applications, including advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). Engineered to meet the stringent functional safety requirements up to ASIL D, these IMUs deliver precise, real-time vehicle dynamics data, supporting reliable decision-making algorithms. Mass production is underway, with samples now available.
It is ASIL B compliant for all technical safety requirements, enhancing ADAS features such as positioning and vision systems for an improved driver experience while driving or parking. It is compact and robust, making it ideal for integration into compact modules requiring high-performance IMUs across a wide temperature range.
The key specifications are:
- Dimensions: 4.5 × 4.5 × 1.1 mm³
- Reliable operation up to 125°C
It offers extended embedded diagnostics for applications demanding higher safety standards, meeting ASIL D requirements. This IMU is optimised for critical functions like electronic/roll stability control (ESC/RSC) and drive-by-wire (DbW), ensuring enhanced safety for advanced automotive systems.
Both IMUs share a consistent core design, package size, and register map, simplifying integration for developers. They feature embedded diagnostics, eliminating the need for external software to achieve functional safety compliance. Their compact QFN package with wettable flanks enables visual inspection during assembly, ensuring reliability.
Developed using the company’s proprietary MEMS fabrication technology, they offer superior reliability and durability and meet AEC-Q100 grade 1 standards. Safety Elements out of Context (SEooC) are poised to revolutionise automotive safety and ADAS applications, ensuring seamless integration and enhanced performance for modern automotive designs.
“These 6-axis IMUs unlock broader application possibilities by providing comprehensive motion detection across all six directions, a capability often missed by traditional 3-axis sensors,” said Alberto Marinoni, Sr. Director Product Marketing Automotive, InvenSense, a TDK Group company. “By simplifying system complexity and enabling miniaturisation, the IAM-20689 sets a new benchmark in automotive safety.”
