A new LED technology combines through-hole and SMD features, offering clarity and resolution for displays.
The latest development in LED signage technology has been done by Cree LED, North Carolina. The newly developed CV28D LEDs, featuring ‘FusionBeam’ Technology, have been introduced, marking a pivotal shift in display clarity and resolution. These LEDs are a unique invention which combine through-hole and surface-mount (SMD) red-green-blue (RGB) LED technologies for enhanced directionality, improved image quality, and increased durability.
The new LEDs redefine signage capabilities, enabling high-resolution displays that can showcase intricate details like photos, logos, and even videos. In contrast to traditional through-hole LEDs, this advancement offers 2.5 times the resolution, akin to moving from standard definition to full HD. FusionBeam Technology, the core of this innovation, blends RGB LED components into a single unified colour and directs it precisely toward the intended audience. This makes the technology particularly appealing to industries like retail, advertising, and public infrastructure, where vibrant, precise visuals are crucial for engaging viewers effectively.
“We are proud to introduce our CV28D LEDs with FusionBeam Technology, the first LED solution to truly bridge the gap between through-hole and SMD technologies in the LED signage market,” stated Joe Clark, president, Cree LED. The advanced design not only enhances viewing experiences but also reduces light trespass and pollution by fourfold compared to standard RGB SMD LEDs.
Furthermore, the LEDs are designed with practicality in mind. Each pixel consists of a single LED package, simplifying assembly while offering IP68 rated dustproof and waterproof reliability. At only 4.3mm in height, these LEDs allow for thinner and lighter displays, making them highly suitable for outdoor environments.
This latest technology bridges an important gap in the industry, catering to both manufacturers and consumers demanding higher display quality and reduced environmental impact. The LEDs set a new standard for information signage for various applications in commercial and public domains. As Clark highlighted, these LEDs “represent the next frontier for LED information signs.”
