An audio innovation has been done by xMEMS Labs, USA by introducing ‘Sycamore’, the world’s first 1mm thin near-field, full-range MEMS micro speaker. Engineered for compact devices like earbuds, smart glasses, and AR/VR headsets, it promises superior sound while improving product design with its ultrathin, all-silicon structure.

The micro speaker operates on a unique “sound from ultrasound” platform that generates full-frequency sound through ultrasonic waves in an exceptionally thin chip. This novel approach offers enhanced audio performance across low and high frequencies, ensuring rich, immersive sound for devices with constrained form factors. Ideal for tech innovators, device manufacturers, and automotive audio designers, it caters to those seeking to create sleeker, high-performance products without sacrificing sound quality.

“Sycamore enables sleeker, thinner devices without compromising on sound quality,” said Mike Housholder, vice president, marketing and business development, xMEMS. In contrast with the traditional dynamic drivers, which are thicker and bulkier, Sycamore is designed for open-air listening, replacing 3mm thick legacy speakers with its compact 1mm profile.

The micro speaker excels in sub-bass extension, offering up to 11dB more headroom than conventional drivers, and delivers exceptional high-frequency clarity with a 15dB improvement above 5kHz. These features make it a viable alternative for use in laptops, portable Bluetooth speakers, and automotive audio systems.

At a mere 8.41 x 9 x 1.13 mm and weighing only 150mg, Sycamore is one-seventh the size and one-third the thickness of traditional dynamic drivers. Its IP58 rating ensures durability, making it resistant to sweat and environmental conditions, ideal for active users and rugged applications.

This innovation continues xMEMS’ legacy of pioneering piezoMEMS technology, with Sycamore using the same platform as the company’s previous creations like the Cypress in-ear µSpeaker and the XMC-2400 µCooling fan. Sampling for this micro speaker is set to begin in early 2025, with mass production expected by October 2025.

By challenging traditional audio design constraints, Sycamore opens new possibilities for thinner, smarter, and more sophisticated electronics, delivering performance and versatility for a wide range of applications.
