Toshiba introduces a new gate driver IC designed to enhance the performance of brushless DC motors in automotive applications, supporting a range of essential functions.
Toshiba, Japan has introduced a new gate driver integrated circuit (IC), named ‘TB9084FTG’, specifically developed for three-phase brushless DC motors used in automotive applications. The IC is designed to drive essential vehicle functions such as body systems, electric pumps, and motor generators. This product is aimed at automotive manufacturers, motor system designers, and engineers seeking efficient, flexible solutions for the electrification of vehicles.
In modern vehicles, many mechanical components are now electrified, and this shift has led to the widespread adoption of brushless DC motors, which are quieter, more durable, and energy-efficient compared to traditional brushed motors. The new IC is engineered to facilitate this transition by offering the necessary functionality for these motors while ensuring compatibility with a variety of automotive systems.
Key features of this IC include its support for external components like MOSFETs, power supply ICs, microcontrollers, and communication PHY, allowing flexibility in system design. As the company explains, “Any change in customer system requirements can be supported by replacing corresponding external devices.” The IC is compact, housed in one of the smallest packages available in its category, measuring just 6mm × 6mm. This size helps contribute to the miniaturisation of automotive equipment. The IC operates with a power supply voltage range from -0.3V to 28V (DC) and can tolerate up to 40V for short durations. The operating temperature range spans from -40°C to 150°C, with a maximum junction temperature of 175°C. Furthermore, the package features a wettable flank structure, which simplifies visual inspection during the manufacturing process, ensuring reliable soldering connections.
The IC is suitable for a broad range of applications within the automotive sector, particularly in body system applications, electric pumps, and motor generators, enhancing the overall electrification of vehicles. Engineers and automotive system developers will find this product valuable in designing compact, efficient, and scalable motor systems for various applications in hybrid and electric vehicles.
The company’s strategic vision is to continue expanding its portfolio of gate driver ICs to meet evolving market demands and improve vehicle safety. With the automotive industry’s push toward greater electrification, innovations like the TB9084FTG IC are critical in driving efficiency, flexibility, and reliability in next-generation vehicles.
