The company Nordic Semiconductor launched a platform, simplifying cellular IoT prototyping with multi-sensor capabilities, global certification, and continuous connectivity.
Nordic Semiconductor has launched the ‘Thingy:91 X’, an advanced platform designed for cellular IoT prototyping. This new device offers developers an easy-to-use, globally certified, and battery-powered solution for LTE-M, NB-IoT, DECT NR+, Wi-Fi locationing, and GNSS applications. By improving the development process, the platform enables faster time-to-market for cellular IoT projects. The product is ideal for developers, engineers, and businesses working in sectors such as asset tracking, connected health, industrial automation, and smart agriculture.
Equipped with the company’s latest nRF9151 system-in-package (SiP), the newly launched platform reduces the footprint by 20% compared to previous models. The nRF9151 supports LTE-M, NB-IoT, GNSS, and DECT NR+ technologies, and is exempt from U.S. tariffs, making it a cost-effective and globally operational solution. Its compact design and enhanced power efficiency make it ideal for location tracking and IoT applications across various industries, including transportation, sports and fitness, and smart homes.
The platform features a variety of onboard sensors, user-programmable buttons, LEDs, and antennas. Powered by a rechargeable 1350mAh lithium-polymer battery managed by the company’s nPM1300 power management IC, it ensures extended battery life and reliable performance. The device comes preloaded with SIM cards from Onomondo and Wireless Logic for immediate cellular IoT connectivity. Once powered up, Thingy:91 X effortlessly connects to the nRF Cloud platform, enabling seamless location identification.
According to Oyvind Birkenes, employee value proposition business unit (long-range), Nordic Semiconductor, “There’s no easier way to get started on cellular IoT application development than with Thingy:91 X.” The device integrates all the essential tools for efficient cellular IoT development, simplifying the process for developers and reducing the time needed to launch advanced IoT products.
The platform also incorporates Wi-Fi SSID locationing through the nRF7002 Wi-Fi companion IC, enhancing its location accuracy. This feature, combined with cellular and GNSS technologies, makes it perfect for asset tracking and other location-based applications. With its developer-friendly software tools and training resources, it is ready to upgrade the IoT prototyping process.
