Turnkey touch controllers provide a quick and efficient way to upgrade from mechanical buttons to modern touch buttons or displays. Microchip Technology has introduced the 12-button MTCH2120 touch controller, offering a streamlined solution for integrating touch button capabilities into user interfaces. This low-power, water-tolerant device is part of the company’s unified ecosystem, simplifying the design process and ensuring smooth transitions between turnkey solutions and MCU-based touch implementations. The MTCH2120 is the first in a planned series of I²C-based touch controllers supported by a comprehensive design-in ecosystem.

It delivers a reliable touch experience that remains unaffected by noise or moisture. It provides flexibility to meet diverse product requirements, with low-power features enabling button grouping to reduce scan activity and power consumption while maintaining full functionality.

Key features and tools include:

  • Easy Tune Feature: Automatically adjusts sensitivity and filter levels based on real-time noise assessment, eliminating complex threshold tuning.
  • Harmony Host Code Configurator Plug-In: Simplifies the connection to Microchip MCUs and MPUs by removing the need to implement the I²C protocol on the host.
  • Data Visualizer: Facilitates design validation.
  • I²C Port Expander Capabilities: Enhances design options.
  • Touch Library: Reduces design cycles by minimizing software engineering and firmware handling.
  • Evaluation Board: Includes a SAM C21 host MCU for seamless prototype integration.

It is the first in the MTCH family to incorporate I²C technology. Additional models such as the MTCH1010, MTCH1030, and MTCH1060 offer similar robust performance with a straightforward GPIO interface. Future MTCH2XXX family solutions will expand bus-controlled flexibility, broadening the reach of the company’s user-friendly design-in ecosystem across more markets.
