Using mining-inspired mineral processing techniques, Bengaluru-based startup Metastable is pushing new horizons in lithium-ion battery recycling!

Founded in 2021 by S. Vishvakarma and M. Uppala, Metastable Material Private Limited, a Bengaluru-based battery recycling startup, employs a unique approach to lithium-ion battery recycling inspired by mining processes.

This innovative methodology has been the subject of several international patent filings and typically takes about five years for the granting process. Unlike traditional chemical recycling methods, Metastable focuses on physical methods of processing and mineral extraction, distinguishing its approach.

According to S. Vishvakarma, this strategy simplifies recycling, minimises chemical dependency, and yields metals instead of salts. The company’s processes and machinery are tailored to this metallurgical engineering-inspired approach.

Explaining the significance of the name ‘Metastable’, Vishvakarma describes it as representing a transitional state between stability and instability, symbolising innovation and transformation. It reflects that a slight push can lead to significant change, aligning with the company’s mission of driving transformative solutions.

Metastable sources used batteries from original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), cell manufacturers, electronics providers, and scrap markets. The output includes commodity-grade materials such as copper, lithium, nickel, steel, aluminium, and plastics, which are reintegrated into various supply chains. For instance, the recycled copper is utilised in brass manufacturing and plumbing.

The startup’s robust supply chain spans the National Capital Region (NCR), Gujarat, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Hyderabad. Additionally, discussions are ongoing with traders globally, including traders in Japan and the United States.

There are numerous challenges in the recycling industry as well, resulting in issues with sourcing used batteries, including quality assurance, segregation, and economic viability.

According to Vishvakarma, despite their outwardly similar appearance, batteries can differ significantly in internal chemistry, impacting their recycling potential. Thus, the startup focuses on efficient handling, transportation, and logistics to ensure operational safety and effectiveness.

Metastable operates one facility near Bengaluru in Harohalli. A new plant is due to open soon in the NCR region. These state-of-the-art facilities are designed for environmentally sustainable operations, featuring zero liquid discharge systems, advanced water management, and air handling units.

The company has a team of a little over 20 full-time employees and is on a rapid growth trajectory.
