Bosch Sensortec releases its first capacitive barometric pressure sensor the BMP581. The energy-efficient barometric is a highly accurate altitude tracking IC and can provide precise location information for applications such as indoor localization, floor detection, and navigation. For communication, the sensor provides multiple interfaces such as I2C, I3C, and SPI (3-wire/4-wire) digital serial interface. The portable size and low power consumption make it suitable for smart wearables, hearables, and IoT applications.

According to the company, the BMP582 draws about 1.3 μA of current at 1Hz and only 0.5 μA current while in the deep standby mode, therefore, consuming 85% less current compared to its predecessor BMP 390. It is capable of providing high relative accuracy of +/-0.06 hPa while the typical absolute accuracy is +/-0.3 hPa. The module provides full accuracy over a range of 300 hPa to 1100 hPa with low RMS noise of 0.08Pa @ 1000hPs while the typical temperature coefficient offset (TCO) is +/0.5 Pa/K.

“Building on the excellent performance and low power consumption of previous generations of Bosch sensors, our new BMP581 now delivers an entirely new level of accuracy”, says Dr. Stefan Finkbeiner, CEO at Bosch Sensortec. “It’s breathtakingly accurate: it can measure a barometric pressure fluctuation that’s equivalent to one-thousandth of the weight of a mosquito (7.6 μg).”

The company claims that the module can detect changes of a few centimeters, therefore, making it capable of even registering individual pull-ups or push-ups. The high accuracy and low power consumption in addition to its compact size make it a good solution for fitness applications such as smartwatches, smart wearables, etc. It can be used in various other products such as smartphones or application which requires high precision such as drones, where it can improve flight stability. The module comes in a compact 10-pin LGA package and measures only 2.0 X 2.0 X 0.75mm3.

The Bosch BMP581 barometric pressure sensor is currently available in the market.
