MediaTek announced a new open resource architecture benefitting brands by allowing customization of features in their Dimensity 1200 chipset powered smartphones.
The 5G wave is hitting India, and every other smartphone launching currently is 5G capable. MediaTek recently announced a new Dimensity 5G Open Resource Architecture that enables customization of key 5G mobile device features like AI, multimedia, and camera. The new Dimensity 5G allows closer access to the Dimensity 1200 chipset allowing customization of features for cameras, displays, graphics, artificial intelligence (AI) processing units (APUs), sensors, and connectivity sub-systems.
By opening up the architecture of the Dimensity 1200 chipset, Mediatek gives the design engineers of other brands the flexibility to customize various elements and tune different features to their preferences. This means that the smartphones using Dimensity 1200 chip can be improved by combining MediaTek’s expertise in areas like AI and other components of the brand.
There are five key areas that brands can customize the Dimensity 1200 chipset to its own preference. Designers can customize the multimedia experience as the Dimensity 5G enhances the interaction between the chipset and the smartphone’s display and audio hardware. They can take advantage of MediaTek’s exclusive artificial intelligence picture quality (AI-PQ) and AI Super Resolution (AI-SR). Moreover, they can develop their algorithms with customized video parameters and scenario detection backed by their deep learning data or dynamically adjust display elements.
The MediaTek’s AI ecosystem NeuroPilot gives better access to MediaTek’s deep learning accelerator (DLA) within the Mediatek AI processing unit allowing the engineers to apply customizations to the multi-threaded scheduler and customized algorithms. They can also choose to access the DLA’s capabilities to integrate INT8, INT16, and FP16 data types within a single AI hardware, which improves the device’s precision, performance, and power efficiency.
The new open resource architecture also allows customization of camera processing engines. The Dimensity 5G provides raw access to the camera image signal processor (ISP) to directly control the data flow that immediately follows once content is captured. It also gives access to the Dimensity 1200 chipset’s low-level camera hardware engines to optimize the configurations to suit their chosen parameters, camera sensors, and software setups. Brands can customize the chipset’s hardware-based visual processing engines, such as depth mapping, image stabilization, warp engine, color correction, and more.
With this new open resource architecture, MediaTek is addressing different market segments. The Dimensity 5G allows brands to sync the latest Bluetooth features with profiles to match their wireless accessories, such as headsets or gaming peripherals.
Dr. Yenchi Lee, Deputy General Manager of MediaTek’s Wireless Communications Business Unit indicates how this step will aid design engineers, “Whether it’s novel multimedia features, unmatched performance, brilliant imaging or more synergy between smartphones and services, with our architecture device makers can tailor their devices to complement a variety of consumer lifestyles.”
MediaTek expects the devices powered by the customized chipsets will hit the global market in July 2021. For full specifications and further details on MediaTek’s Dimensity 1200, please visit: https://www.mediatek.com/products/smartphones/mediatek-dimensity-1200.
