Low-Cost Corona Sanitising Chamber

ashwiniStaying safe and disinfected these days is one of the major issues. The chances of spreading the virus through touch has high probability in daily life. Therefore, we need an equipment that can kill and destroy the reproductive system of bacteria and viruses to prevent ourselves from any infection.

WARNING:- Prolonged exposure to UV light on skin and eyes can cause damage to your health. So wear UV protective glasses and cover the skin before experimenting with bright UV light.

Our corona oven uses the power of UV rays to kill germs such as bacteria and virus from the surface of any object and help in sanitization. Out of the three main types of UV rays: UVA, UVB and UVC rays, UVC has the shortest wavelength between 200 and 400 nanometer and has the highest energy that can kill bacteria and viruses.

This range of  UV light can also destroy molecular bonds. Wavelength between 200nm and 300nm get absorbed by nucleic acids. The DNA Molecule is made of two bonds and four bases: Adenine(A), Cytosine(C), Guanine(G) and Thymine(T).The UV light causes the Thymine base to fuse together and destroys the virus’ ability to reproduce.

We can use the corona oven in hospitals to sanitize PPE kits, masks, napkins, pillow covers and many more items.

So let’s start our project by gathering the following components

Bill Of Materials for UV Sanitizing Chamber

Connection and Construction

Firstly, we will take an empty box. It is recommended to use a box that has a shiny reflective metallic inside-surface. But if you are using a plastic or a cardboard box, then it is advised to coat the inner surface with a metallic reflective paint. You can also cover the inside part with a reflective aluminum foil.

Now after completing the reflective case construction, place the LED strip in the middle or upper-part of the box in such a way that the light emitting from it spreads uniformly inside the box. And then firmly fix the LED strip at that place.

Next, insert the powering wire of the LED strip through a hole in the box and connect it to a 12V to 24V DC adaptor or any 24V DC-DC converter.

Testing

Cross check all connections, wear a UV protective glass on your eye and cover your skin to prevent any damage after which you can power the corona oven. As the UV light is switched on, put objects in it like smartphone, mask, napkin, PPE kit or any other material that you want to sanitize and close the cover of the box. Wait for 3 to 5 minutes for the UV radiation to do its job. After that, power off the device and then take out the sanitized objects.

Congrats!! Your corona sanitizing chamber is ready.
