PD Power Bank Reference Design

Power Delivery (PD) power banks have emerged as a critical solution in today’s fast-paced world, where the need for rapid, efficient, and versatile charging options is more prominent than ever. Their universal USB-C compatibility streamlines how devices are powered, reducing the clutter of multiple cables and adapters while ensuring devices stay charged on the go. The MEZZ 7-1S-4SPDPowerBank is a reference design from Monolithic Power Solution that integrates the MP2651 buck-boost charger and the CCG3PA PD controller from Cypress for PD applications. 

The module supports PD3.0 and BC1.2 protocols, making it suitable for devices that use USB Power Delivery standards. The buck-boost charger can handle battery packs ranging from 1 to 4 cells in series, offering a flexible input voltage range from 3V to 21V at the source mode input pin and complies with USB PD specifications. The PD controller manages the PD communication to ensure smooth power delivery. The power bank features a Dual Role Power (DRP) USB Type-C port, which can switch roles. As a UFP (upstream-facing port), it charges the battery up to a 5A current when an adapter is connected, and as a DFP (downstream-facing port), it can power a USB device directly from the battery.

It is configured to support commonly used capacitors in its layout. The charging settings are optimized for a 2-cell Li-ion battery, with the current and voltage preset at 5A and 8.4V, respectively. Additionally, in reverse source mode, it outputs 5V at 3A. The controller controls all charge and discharge parameters, ensuring precise power delivery management.
