Implementation Of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) Control

Nowadays, Permanent magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSMs) have become quite popular in applications such as Air conditioner & refrigerator (AC) compressors, washing machines, dishwashers, automotive electrical power steering, industrial automation, and more. Turn to these reference designs which explain how to optimally control permanent magnet synchronous motors. To accelerate design process, each design includes schematics, application notes, bill of materials, and other supporting documents:-

Three-phase PMSM Control For Industrial Motor Drives:

pmsm motor nsp

Here is a reference design using vector control or field-oriented control (FOC), of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) for advanced industrial motor drive applications. Together with the source code, this reference design also explains how to measure the electrical parameters needed for vector control of PMSM. These electrical parameters are required to be set for proper functioning of the motor. The information of motor shaft position is critical to execute the vector control algorithm. The design is built around a Kinetis K60 ARM MCU which implements advanced position estimation algorithms to get position information without the need to use the rotor shaft position sensor.More on this Reference Design

Control of Dual PMSM For Refrigeration Unit:

This reference design targets control of two permanent magnetic synchronous motors (PMSM) of a high voltage AC refrigerator compressor and a fan without using position sensor. The design provides a human machine interface (HMI) and touch capabilities, and drives two 3-phase PMSMs with sensorless FOC.  The design is based on a Freescale’s DSC MC56F84789 ideal for digital motor control. The DSC combines the calculation capability with the features of the MCU on a single chip to produce a cost-effective, high-efficiency and low-noise solution. The system is designed to work on a wide input voltage range of 90 – 245 V and is equipped with remote RS-232 control. More on this Reference Design

PMSM Motor Drive based on High-performance MCU:

This reference design presents a cost-effective, high-performance and power-efficient method to control the speed of 3-phase brushless DC and brushless AC (BLAC) motors (often called permanent magnet synchronous (PMSM) motors). The design uses the method of sensorless Field Oriented Control (FOC) to provide smooth motion at slow speeds as well as efficient operation at high speeds. This reference design utilises the capabilities of the high-performance RM46L852 Hercules MCU and its extensive Math libraries for development of PMSM control algorithms. The motor current and bus voltage are sensed by the ADC on the MCU. The MCU generates PWM signals for the gate driver to drive the motor. The MCU communicates with the gate driver over the SPI port to identify the cause of any fault indication. The reference design also evaluates the performance of the speed controller. More on this Reference Design
