Reference Design For 1kW LLC Module

By combining high efficiency, compact size, and reliable performance, it sets a new benchmark for power conversion designs, making it a versatile solution across various industries and applications.

The EPC9149 demonstration board by Microchip Technology is a power conversion solution designed as a reference for high-performance applications. It delivers enhanced efficiency, compactness, and power density, making it well-suited for demanding environments such as data centers, industrial systems, power conversion processes, and power supplies. As modern applications demand smaller power solutions with minimal energy losses, it offers optimized performance, achieving peak efficiency of 97.5%. Its design prioritizes high efficiency and power density, ensuring it meets the requirements of critical applications where energy savings and space are essential. It is a 1kW LLC converter configured for a 48V input to 12V output operation, functioning as a DC transformer with a fixed conversion ratio of 4:1.

It utilizes advanced gallium nitride (eGaN) FETs to achieve industry-leading performance. It integrates the EPC2218 (100V-rated) and EPC2024 (40V-rated) eGaN FETs, which help minimize conduction losses and enhance efficiency at high switching speeds. Operating with a fixed switching frequency of 1 MHz, the EPC9149 ensures fast and stable power conversion. Additionally, the included EPC9533 controller module features the Microchip dsPIC33CK32MP102 16-bit digital controller, providing precise and efficient control over the power conversion process. Compact and easy to integrate, the design measures just 22.9 mm x 58.4 mm (0.90 in x 2.30 in) with a low profile of only 10 mm, making it highly adaptable for space-constrained systems.  This design offers several key benefits.

Its optimized footprint and low profile enable seamless integration into small enclosures, while the peak efficiency of 97.5% at 400W and full-load efficiency of 96.7% at 12V delivering 83.3A output ensure exceptional performance. The converter boasts a high power density of 1227 W/in³, offering substantial power in a compact form factor. Its design also ensures reliable operation without the need for an external heatsink, simplifying thermal management. It supports several high-performance applications. In data centers, it enhances energy efficiency for power-intensive operations. In industrial systems, it ensures stable power delivery for automation and manufacturing processes. For power conversion applications, it facilitates efficient DC-DC conversion, while in power supplies, it provides high-efficiency solutions for sensitive electronic equipment.

Microchip Technology has tested this reference design. It comes with a bill of materials (BOM), schematics, assembly drawing, printed circuit board (PCB) layout, and more. The company’s website has additional data about the reference design. To read more about this reference design, click here.
