Phison introduces the world’s first 128TB storage drive which has potential to transform data centre storage with efficiency and performance.
Phison Electronics, Atlanta, USA introduced the world’s first PCIe Gen5 128TB SSD, the ‘Pascari D205V’, a leap in storage capacity aimed at transforming data centre infrastructure. The 122.88TB drive brings unparalleled performance and storage efficiency, offering a four-to-one capacity advantage over traditional hard drives. With its exceptional capacity-per-watt, the drive supports high-speed data processing while reducing both operational expenses and physical space demands for data-intensive industries such as AI, media, research, and beyond.
The drive’s core innovation, powered by company’s advanced X2 controller and the latest 2Tb 3D quad-level cell (QLC) technology, enables sequential read speeds of up to 14,600MB/s and random read performance up to 3,000K input/output operations per second. By delivering double the read speed and storage capacity compared to previous Gen4 SSDs, the drive positions itself as a powerful solution for next-generation data centres. Its capabilities are particularly valuable for enterprises dealing with massive datasets and high-performance workloads, as they can now achieve top-tier storage efficiency and minimal energy use across their server infrastructure.
Since launching this drive in May, the company has steadily expanded its enterprise offerings. “The ability to recapture power and rack storage efficiency while supporting intensive workloads at PCIe Gen5 speeds is critical in modern data centres,” said Don Jeanette, SSD research vice president, TRENDFOCUS. According to Michael Wu, general manager, Phison, “With today’s launch, each drive maximises capacity while reducing power, space, and cooling constraints to support transformative use cases.” It aims to address a growing need for efficient and scalable storage solutions that can handle the increasing data demands from AI training and complex analytics.
The drive is expected to ship in the second quarter of the year 2025 and will be available in popular U.2 and E3.L form factors, making it accessible for a range of enterprise infrastructures. For data centres focused on optimising their storage setup, it will provide substantial efficiency gains in space and power utilisation, a critical need as datasets continue to grow.
For enterprises looking to future-proof their storage, this drive offers a transformative solution with its record-breaking capacity, enhanced speed, and energy efficiency, enabling businesses to expand storage capabilities while maintaining operational sustainability.
