Dive into the world of enhanced power solutions with RECOM’s compact regulators that redefine efficiency, opening doors to broader input ranges and extended temperature capabilities. Experience cost savings, compact designs, and versatile performance in a single solution.
The three-terminal R-78 series switching regulators by RECOM have gained significant popularity as efficient alternatives to the traditional ’78 series’ linear regulators. These switching regulators offer enhancements in efficiency, effectively negating the requirement for heatsinks. This not only results in cost savings but also conserves valuable board space.
Expanding the lineup, RECOM has introduced the budget-friendly R-78CK-0.5 series, capable of operating with input voltages up to 40V and across a broader temperature range of up to +100°C. These regulators boast an output current rating of 0.5A and have fixed output voltage options of 3.3V, 5V, 12V, and 15V. Presented as a non-isolated DC-DC converter, this compact 0.5 amp switching regulator offers efficiency and size advantages. The key features include:
- Efficiency up to 96%, no need for heatsinks
- Pin-out compatible with LM78xx linear
- Compact package (L*W*H=11.5*7.55*10.2mm)
- Wide input range (5V – 40V)
- Short circuit protection, thermal shutdown
- Low ripple and noise
- IEC/EN62368-1 certified
- Positive to negative converter
This solution serves diverse applications effectively. Fixed output voltage options include 3.3V, 5V, 12V, and 15V, simplifying its utilisation. The customised voltage outputs are available upon request. It functions as a positive-to-negative converter, catering to circuits necessitating a negative voltage source. When operating with increased input voltages, the complete 0.5A output capacity can be harnessed, extending to a minimum ambient temperature of +65°C, contingent upon the specific variant in use. These units offer comprehensive safeguards, encompassing full input under-voltage protection, short-circuit protection, and thermal protection.
This latest iteration introduces enhancements, including a reduced quiescent current, a narrower allowable input-output differential voltage for the 3.3V and 5V output models, and a more compact package size in all dimensions. Despite these improvements, the standard pinout is retained. Unlike linear regulators, to be configured for generating a negative output from a positive input.
Matthew Dauterive, DC/DC product manager of RECOM, comments: “The R-78CK-0.5 series now addresses wider applications with its higher input voltage rating and wider operating temperature range”.
