The company claims the Raspberry Pi 5 2GB model performs well for beginners and engineering enthusiasts.

Raspberry Pi has added a new model to the Raspberry Pi 5 family: the 2GB model, now available from element14. Since the launch of the Raspberry Pi 5 over ten months ago, this product line has fulfilled Raspberry Pi’s initial vision: to provide an affordable, general-purpose desktop computer that functions like a traditional PC for most users. It includes everything a beginner needs to start a career in engineering, from basic programming to a career in engineering.

The Raspberry Pi 5 has significantly improved performance, about 150 times more powerful than the first model released in 2012. This increase is due to engineering, the advantages of mass production, and technological advancements. However, achieving higher performance has resulted in higher component costs.

The 4GB and 8GB Raspberry Pi 5 models rely on two main components: the RP1 I/O controller, developed for platform interfacing, and the BCM2712C1, a 16nm application processor from Broadcom. This complex and capable processor features a quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 at 2.4GHz and the latest version of the VideoCore multimedia platform. It includes features for other market applications that are not used and deactivated but still add to the cost.

The new D0 stepping eliminates these unnecessary features, focusing only on what is needed for the Raspberry Pi. This makes it functionally the same as its predecessor but less expensive to produce. The operating system, Raspberry Pi OS, is optimized to improve performance on these devices.

Raspberry Pi OS uses fewer resources on current hardware than most general-purpose Linux distributions. While users who need to handle dual 4K displays, open many browser tabs, or compile large software may prefer the higher-capacity models, many will find the new, more affordable variant sufficient for their needs.
