With high efficiency, EMI compliance, and comprehensive protection features, it is ideal for enhancing automotive lighting applications like DRLs, fog lights, and interior illumination.

Diodes Incorporated has expanded its automotive-compliant LED driver portfolio with the introduction of the AL8891Q. This advanced synchronous buck LED driver delivers up to 2A output current across a wide input voltage range of 4.5V to 65V, making it ideal for driving long LED chains in automotive lighting applications, including daytime running lights (DRL), fog lights, turn lights, brake/stop lights, and interior lighting.

The key specifications include:

  • Adjustable Switching Frequency: 200kHz to 2.5MHz for efficiency optimization or compact design.
  • PWM Dimming Range: 0.1kHz to 2kHz for precise, high-resolution dimming.
  • Analog Dimming Range: 0.15V to 2V for flexible dimming control.
  • Operating Temperature: -40°C to +125°C for reliable performance in harsh environments.

It features a constant-on-time (COT) control architecture, enabling fast transient response, cycle-by-cycle current limiting, and simplified control-loop compensation without requiring an external compensation capacitor. Its switching frequency can be adjusted offering flexibility to optimize efficiency or achieve a smaller, space-saving inductor size. The device also incorporates spread spectrum frequency modulation, improving EMI performance to meet the stringent CISPR 25 Class 5 standard.

Designed for versatility, it supports both PWM and analog dimming. It offers precise high-resolution dimming, while the analog dimming range allows further flexibility. An internal soft-start function reduces inrush current by gradually ramping the inductor and switch current, helping to prevent potential output overvoltage and overcurrent conditions. To enhance system robustness, it integrates comprehensive protection features, including thermal shutdown with auto-restart, input undervoltage lockout (UVLO), cycle-by-cycle current limit, and LED open and short circuit detection with fault reporting. These features ensure reliable operation across challenging automotive environments.

It is offered in a thermally enhanced TSSOP-16EP package, supporting an It is priced at $0.78 each for 1,000-unit quantities. A standard compliance version is available for industrial and commercial applications.
