The Xion E-Bike HMI system is an electric bike controller display which transmits riding metrics using Bluetooth low energy.
Foxconn Interconnect Technology, a Taiwanese-based company has released Xion E-Bike human-machine interface (HMI) system. The HMI system employs Nordic Semiconductor’s nRF52840 SoC to send riding data to the user’s smartphone using Bluetooth LE connectivity. The HMI system combines a traditional bike display with a controller, allowing riders to view riding metrics and switch between different assistance levels. Notably, it includes a unique ‘walking mode’ specifically for when the bicycle is being pushed.
The Xion E-Bike HMI System boasts a compact and powerful design, measuring a mere 74.3 by 46 by 14 mm. It features a high luminance and high contrast display with a wide view angle, ensuring enhanced visibility while biking. The device is conveniently mounted on the e-bike’s handlebars for easy access and usability.
One of the key components enabling the functionality of the Xion E-Bike HMI System is Nordic Semiconductor’s nRF52840 System-on-Chip (SoC). This SoC utilizes Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) connectivity to transmit crucial data, such as the rider’s speed and range, to the corresponding app on the user’s smartphone or tablet. The nRF52840 SoC incorporates a 32-bit Arm Cortex-M4 processor with a floating-point unit (FPU), providing ample computational power to oversee the device’s operations. According to the company, to eliminate the need for frequent recharging, the Xion E-Bike HMI System is hardwired to the bike’s battery. This arrangement also allows the device to display the bike’s current charge level, providing riders with valuable information.
Mr Joseph Wang, the Chief Technology Officer at Foxconn Interconnect Technology, says “We chose to work with Nordic largely due to its excellent software reference code, the helpful application engineers, and the fast response times.”
