Researchers from u-blox, Switzerland have developed the SARA-R10001DE module, an ideal LTE Cat 1bis device featuring an embedded eSIM to enhance connectivity for Internet of Things (IoT) applications. This innovation guarantees reliable network switching for optimal coverage and cost-efficiency, transforming IoT deployment.

The module supports full LTE Cat 1bis bands and includes refers to SIM cards that contain multiple international mobile subscriber identities (multi-IMSI) technology with embedded universal integrated circuit card (eUICC) capability. The eSIM is pre-configured with multiple wireless logic SIM profiles, enabling seamless remote provisioning through over-the-air (OTA) updates. This ensures uninterrupted connectivity by automatically switching to the most reliable network when necessary.

Designed for industries such as telematics, smart homes, asset tracking, and point-of-sale systems, the module addresses the needs of businesses seeking streamlined logistics and reliable IoT solutions. It is particularly beneficial for developers and manufacturers working on applications requiring consistent connectivity across diverse geographies and harsh environments.

An embedded eSIM minimises logistical challenges by removing the need for separate SIM cards or holders. “Our new module with inbuilt connectivity has been designed to offer the best user experience by making it simpler and quicker to achieve reliable connectivity while delivering cost efficiencies,” said Samuele Falcomer, LPWA product line manager, u-blox.

The module simplifies processes by allowing a single stock-keeping unit (SKU) to replace multiple SIM-dependent variations, reducing inventory complexity and storage needs. Its robust design, with the eSIM soldered like a standard component, eliminates issues such as warping that affect traditional plastic SIMs.

Moreover, the device provides an efficient transition path for legacy 2G and 3G devices to global 4G LTE coverage. With these features, the module stands out as a versatile solution for IoT applications requiring high reliability and adaptability.

This advancement reaffirms the pivotal role of embedded eSIM technology in reshaping global IoT connectivity and optimising resource management.
