Thingy:91 X is a globally certified, multi-sensor, battery-powered cellular IoT prototyping platform designed for developers perfect for creating and testing IoT solutions with ease and reliability anywhere in the world.
Nordic Semiconductor has unveiled its latest IoT prototyping platform, the Nordic Thingy:91 X, designed for LTE-M, NB-IoT, Wi-Fi SSID locationing, DECT NR+, and GNSS applications. This advanced platform simplifies the development of cellular IoT applications, enabling faster time-to-market with its robust suite of onboard features.
It incorporates the company’s new nRF9151 System-in-Package (SiP)—the world’s most compact cellular IoT SiP for battery-powered, global locationing applications. With a 20% smaller footprint than its predecessors, the nRF9151 supports LTE-M, NB-IoT, GNSS, and DECT NR+ technologies. It is globally certified and U.S. tariff-free, offering developers seamless operation worldwide.
This battery-powered device includes environmental sensors, motion tracking, programmable buttons, LEDs, and multiple antennas. Its 1350 mAh rechargeable Li-Po battery, managed by the company’s award-winning nPM1300 power management IC (PMIC), ensures exceptional battery performance and precise fuel-gauging. Preloaded SIM cards from Onomondo and Wireless Logic enable instant cellular IoT connectivity.
The platform connects effortlessly to the nRF Cloud, Nordic’s web-based service optimized for its wireless solutions. Upon setup,it provides precise location tracking, enhancing user convenience. It integrates nRF7002 Wi-Fi companion IC, enabling Wi-Fi SSID locationing alongside cellular (SCELL, MCELL) and GNSS technologies. Combined with nRF Cloud Location Services, developers can achieve an optimal balance of location accuracy and power consumption, making it ideal for asset tracking applications.
Supported by the nRF Connect SDK and Nordic’s Developer Academy, it offers comprehensive tools and training to maximize the platform’s potential. “The Thingy:91 X is the easiest way to start cellular IoT application development,” says Oyvind Birkenes, EVP BU Long-Range at Nordic Semiconductor. “It combines all the tools developers need into one simple, ready-to-use solution.”
