New MEMS Microphones from CUI Devices can help you design Active Noise Canceling headphones.

CUI Devices has announced a couple of new high-quality microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) microphone that is suitable for active noise cancellation. The CMM-2718AB-3815NC-TR and CMM-2718AT-3817NC-TR are analog MEMS microphones that come in a compact package measuring just 2.75 x 1.85 x 0.90 mm. Both models work over a frequency range from 20Hz to 20kHz and have a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The small size, high acoustic overload points and high SNR makes it suitable for use in high-quality noise-cancelling microphone arrays.

Noise cancelling technology is of two types, passive noise cancelling and active noise cancelling. Passive noise cancelling is purely hardware based where a strong seal around the ears is made to prevent the noise from the surrounding from reaching the ears of the user. Active noise cancellation on the other hand sense the ambient noise from the surrounding and creates a negative sound wave, thus, eliminating the original ambient noise. Active noise cancellation is useful in a lot of cases but requires additional components which require more space on the PCB and makes it more expensive. Both the microphones come in compact packages and are reflow solder compatible which provides designers additional design flexibility as these components can be soldered at hard-to-reach corners.

The CMM-2718AB-3815NC-TR and CMM-2718AT-3817NC-TR feature omnidirectional directivity and bottom or top port locations, respectively. Both MEMS have a high SNR of 62 or 64 dBA and high acoustic overload points (AOP) of 123 or 128 dB SPL. The MEMS microphones have a tight sensitivity tolerance of ±1 dB and a sensitivity rating of -38 dB. The CMM-2718AB-3815NC-TR and CMM-2718AT-3817NC-TR also carry current consumption as low as 150 microamps (µA) and operating temperature ranges from -30 to 85°C.
