RECOM R-78Kxx is a series of high-efficiency three-terminal switching regulators. Three-terminal switching regulators are voltage regulators that use a switching topology to regulate the output voltage. They typically consist of a power switch, an inductor, a diode, and a capacitor. The power switch rapidly switches on and off, creating a high-frequency signal that is passed through the inductor to create a stable output voltage. The R-78 series is a replacement for the company’s existing three-terminal, TO-220 style linear regulators and offers savings of energy, board space, and cost, by eliminating heatsinks and assembly overheads. The R-78 series can work with input voltage up to 36V and offers efficiency up to 96%. The R-78Kxx series can be used for a wide variety of electronic applications including applications in embedded circuits to provide a constant input to a processor, sensor, display, etc.
The R-78K series features various protection features including under-voltage lockout and short-circuit protection with automatic recovery and can meet EN 55032 class B EMC specifications with a simple input filter. The R-78 series offers compact versions rated for 0.5A and 1A which are available in a SIP-3 miniature package, with a footprint of 11.5 x 7.55mm and a height of 10.2mm. Furthermore, the company also offers a higher-powered version rated for 2A, which is available in an 11.5 x 8.5mm footprint and 17.5mm high, again in a SIP-3 arrangement. The switching regulators are rated for temperatures up to 90°C with no derating. Making it suitable for use in low-powered electronics applications without active cooling.
