Power-Efficient SoCs Enhance Entry-Level ADAS

The new R-Car V4M and V4H SoC devices are designed for the large L2 and L2+ advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) market; they are built to be scalable and allow easy software reuse from current R-Car devices.

Renesas Electronics Corporation has introduced an expansion to its R-Car Family of system-on-chips (SoCs), aimed at entry-level Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). The new offerings include the R-Car V4M series and an extension to the existing R-Car V4H series, designed to enhance AI processing and CPU performance while optimising power efficiency. These new SoCs are particularly suited for cost-sensitive ADAS applications, such as front smart cameras, surround-view systems, automatic parking, and driver monitoring systems.

Both series are built on a 7-nanometer (nm) process technology, the same advanced manufacturing technique used in the R-Car V4H series. The R-Car V4M delivers a deep learning performance of up to 17 TOPS (Tera Operations Per Second) while efficiently processing high-speed images and enabling precise object recognition from various sensors, including cameras, radar, and LiDAR. These devices provide scalable options within the company’s’ ADAS portfolio, allowing automotive OEMs and Tier-1 suppliers to choose the best-suited SoC for their specific needs. With software and pin compatibility across the series, the devices facilitate reuse of existing software, helping developers reduce costs and streamline engineering processes.

The key features include:

  • Feature up to 4 Arm Cortex-A76 cores.
  • Deliver up to 81K DMIPS for application processing.
  • Both have 3 Arm Cortex-R52 lockstep cores for real-time operations.
  • Provide up to 25K DMIPS for real-time tasks.
  • ASIL D safety compliance is ensured

Their power efficiency is notable, achieving 9 TOPS per watt. For example, an 8-megapixel smart camera utilizing the R-Car V4M consumes only 5 watts—about 50% less power than comparable devices in the market. The company offers the R-Car Open Access (RoX) platform, an SDV (Software-Defined Vehicle) development environment for developers working with the series. The RoX platform includes the hardware, operating systems, and software tools to enable fast and efficient development of ADAS, In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI), gateway systems, and more. It also comes with a Software Development Kit (SDK) and an AI Workbench, which allow developers to validate models and applications in the cloud, further accelerating development cycles. The series are currently being sampled by automotive manufacturers, with mass production expected to begin in the first quarter of 2026.
