The microprocessor family offers high-performance AI and ML capabilities, integrated TSN Ethernet connectivity, and post-quantum security, providing a scalable and resilient solution for next-generation edge systems.
The edge computing market is projected to grow by over 30% in the next five years, driven by mission-critical applications across aerospace, defense, industrial, and medical sectors. To meet the demand for reliable, mixed-criticality solutions, Microchip introduces the PIC64HX microprocessor (MPU) family, purpose-built for advanced intelligent edge designs.
It is a high-performance, 64-bit, multicore RISC-V MPU that excels in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) processing. It features integrated Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) Ethernet connectivity and defense-grade post-quantum security, setting a new benchmark in edge computing. Designed for scalability, power efficiency, and fault tolerance, this MPU offers a comprehensive solution for modern, connected applications.
The key features include:
- 45 × 45 mm Package
- Available in industrial, aviation, and military-grade versions
- Enhanced security features
- AI/ML processing capabilities
- Integrated TSN (Time-Sensitive Networking) switching
The integrated TSN Ethernet switch supports emerging standards such as IEEE P802.1DP for aerospace, IEEE P802.1DG for automotive, and IEEE/IEC 60802 for industrial automation. Powered by eight 64-bit RISC-V CPU cores with SiFive Intelligence X280 vector extensions, it supports mixed-criticality systems, advanced virtualization, and AI acceleration.
This versatile MPU allows system developers to configure cores for SMP, AMP, or dual-core lockstep operations, enhancing flexibility. The built-in WorldGuard architecture ensures hardware-based isolation and partitioning for added security and reliability. Addressing the future threat of quantum computing, it is one of the first MPUs to support post-quantum cryptographic algorithms (FIPS 203 and FIPS 204), ensuring it meets evolving security standards.
The company’s Mi-V ecosystem supports the platform, featuring tools, libraries, real-time operating systems, and the Curiosity Ultra+ evaluation kit to accelerate development. With enhanced connectivity, AI capabilities, and post-quantum security, the PIC64HX is designed to power the future of intelligent edge applications.
“We’ve packed an unprecedented number of advanced features into the PIC64HX, delivering a robust, single-chip solution,” said Maher Fahmi, corporate vice president of Microchip’s communications business unit. “With integrated TSN Ethernet, we simplify system designs, reduce costs, and shorten time-to-market for developers.”
