It plays a vital role in electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, contributing to the efficient charging and power management systems required to support the growing EV ecosystem.

Littelfuse, Inc. has introduced the SMFA Asymmetrical Series Surface-Mount TVS Diode, the first asymmetrical TVS solution designed specifically to protect Silicon Carbide (SiC) MOSFET gates from overvoltage events. As SiC MOSFETs gain popularity due to their faster switching speeds and higher efficiency compared to Silicon MOSFETs and IGBTs, the demand for robust gate protection solutions continues to rise. This innovative diode provides a single-component solution that simplifies circuit design while improving system reliability.

Traditional methods require multiple Zener or TVS diodes to protect MOSFET gates. However, the Asymmetrical Series simplifies this by offering comprehensive protection in a single component, effectively addressing ringing and overshoot in gate drive circuits. This reduction in components saves valuable PCB space and streamlines circuit layout.

 Key Features and Benefits:

  • Asymmetrical Design: Engineered for the unique negative and positive gate voltage ratings of SiC MOSFETs, ensuring reliable overvoltage protection.
  • Single-Component Solution: Replaces the need for multiple Zener and TVS diodes, reducing complexity and design effort.
  • Space Efficiency: Minimizes PCB space usage, enabling compact and efficient layouts.
  • Broad Compatibility: Works seamlessly with Littelfuse and other major SiC MOSFETs for versatile application use.

AI and data center server power supplies ensure reliable performance, supporting the critical power demands of high-performance computing systems. Similarly, electric vehicle infrastructure (EVI) power systems play a vital role in protecting EV charging stations, ensuring both durability and efficiency for seamless operation. In semiconductor and industrial environments, specialized power supplies are essential for maintaining high reliability and uptime, safeguarding the equipment that drives these demanding industries. The Series is available in tape and reel format with a standard quantity of 3,000 units.

“Our SMFA Asymmetrical TVS Diodes deliver reliable SiC MOSFET gate protection with a space-saving, single-component solution, replacing multiple diodes,” said Ben Huang, Director of Product Marketing at Littelfuse. “This enhances design efficiency and ensures robust circuit protection.”
