Renesas Introduces USB PD EPR Solution Featuring Type-C Port Controller and Buck-Boost Battery Charger

Renesas Electronics Corporation has introduced two new integrated circuits (ICs): the RAA489118 buck-boost battery charger and the RAA489400 USB Type-C port controller. These ICs provide an Extended Power Range (EPR) USB Power Delivery (PD) solution. The company claims these solutions help customers reduce development time with a development environment and pre-certified USB-IF reference designs.

The RAA489118 works as a battery charger for two to seven battery cells in series or as a voltage regulator with 30V input and output support. Renesas’ Robust Ripple Regulator technology combines fixed-frequency and hysteretic Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) to provide noise-free operation, fast response, and light-load efficiency for longer battery life.

The press release says it includes a System Management Bus interface, making it suitable for power tools, home appliances, and industrial products. Its compatibility with the RAA489400 and other USB-C PD components allows for integration. Its voltage range also works with solar power systems, making it useful for portable solar power stations.

The RAA489400 USB Type-C port controller supports USB-PD VBUS power up to 48V/5A. It includes an integrated PHY, Sink and Source Power Path Gate Drivers with external NFETs, short-circuit protection, VBUS discharge, a VCONN MUX, and dead battery support.

A few key features of the USB EPR PD solution include:

  • Supports 2–7 battery cells in series
  • Acts as a buck-boost voltage regulator (30V input/output)
  • Uses R3™ technology for better efficiency
  • Fast transient response for improved performance
  • Includes thermal management and safety features
  • Works with various applications
  • Protects against overcharging, overheating, and voltage issues
  • Enables bidirectional power flow
  • USB-IF-certified design reduces testing time
  • Offers design support and tools

“Renesas has been a worldwide leader in battery charging for many years based on advanced technology, adaptability, and exceptional value,” said Chris Allexandre, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Power at Renesas. “The RAA489118 and RAA489400 bring those strengths along with Renesas’ strong legacy of safety and reliability to new applications such as power tools and light industrial products. We expect to see strong demand from customers across multiple markets.”
