HaiLa Technologies Inc., a company that develops wireless SoC solutions for IoT devices, has partnered with e-peas Semiconductor, a provider of energy harvesting technology, to advance long-lasting energy storage solutions for Wi-Fi-connected sensors. Their efforts focus on using low-power RF and power management ICs to decrease reliance on traditional batteries in various applications, reducing costs and environmental impact.

The HaiLa BSC2000 RF Evaluation Chip integrates HaiLa’s passive backscatter technology for Wi-Fi frequencies and supports an SPI interface. This chip connects to a range of IoT devices, such as temperature and humidity sensors, promoting advancements in wireless communication. By using existing Wi-Fi infrastructure, HaiLa’s technology facilitates cost-effective sensor integration.

The AEM10941 from e-peas’ Ambient Energy Managers series is an energy management circuit that extracts DC power from photovoltaic cells. It stores energy and provides two regulated voltages, supporting more extended battery life and aiming to remove disposable batteries in many wireless applications.

“Leveraging the e-peas team’s deep expertise in PMICs, we’ve demonstrated an energy-harvested power source for Wi-Fi-based sensor connectivity,” said Patricia Bower, VP Product Management, HaiLa Technologies, Inc. “This is a critical step towards HaiLa’s mission to enable sustainable scaling of IoT on Wi-Fi, and we’re excited to show the joint solution at Sensors Converge.”

“The close collaboration with HaiLa’s team to showcase the power of our combined technologies demonstrates new possibilities to run autonomous Wi-Fi devices free of disposable battery and maintenance requirements,” said Christian Ferrier, Chief Marketing Officer, e-peas S.A. “We’re excited to contribute to the new era of new Wi-Fi devices powered by energy harvesting.”

This partnership positions HaiLa’s passive backscatter technology, which is adaptable to various protocols, as a practical option for Wi-Fi, the predominant WLAN technology in multiple environments, facilitating broader IoT integration.
