Using UV-C Light To Fight Deadly Viruses And For Disinfecting Objects

UV-C light eliminates up to 99.9 per cent of viruses and bacteria while integrating it into an LED saves space for disinfection applications

Uncertainty remains as to how long the coronavirus pandemic will last. Till then, it is important to stay safe and healthy in everyday life by continuing to wear a facemask and practising social distance to prevent the spread of germs. Besides these, having light in the right wavelength also makes an enormous contribution to fighting viruses. UV-C light can eliminate 99.9 per cent of viruses and bacteria on surfaces, in the air and in drinking water. It also breaks down the chemical bonds in the RNA or DNA helix of the pathogen, which makes them harmless and prevents from spreading.

UV-C light has been used for many years to disinfect air or water – but often with very large lamps based on conventional light technologies. Now with the Oslon UV 3636, UV-C light can be obtained with the help of LEDs that can be implemented in small disinfection applications.

The LED operates in a wavelength of 275 nanometers. The LED has two versions:

  • Low-power version achieves 4.5 milliwatts at 30 milliamperes.
  • Mid-power version achieves 42 milliwatts at 350 milliamperes.

Both versions are ideal for disinfection applications.

Benefits

  • Compact size: The LEDs can be installed easily on the final application for direct interaction with the objects being sanitised such as faucets and air conditioning systems.
  • Safe for use: The high-energy, short-wave UV-C light does not reach the surrounding area and therefore does not pose a risk to people.
  • Robust and insensitive to external shocks.

“Thanks to their compact footprint and different optical power classes, UV-C LEDs enable completely new designs and applications. A high-power UV-C LED will be launched in early 2021,” said Christian Leirer, Product Manager for UV-C at Osram Opto Semiconductors.

The Oslon UV 3636 will be available in a compact dimension of 3.6 mm x 3.6 mm from OSRAM.
