- These MLCCs by TDK Corporation provide compact connections, resulting in lower ESL and ESR values
- Suitable for high-compute applications required in modern day automotives
TDK Corporation has introduced a new capacitor series, which it claims to be the world’s first flip-type MLCCs (Multilayer Ceramic Chip Capacitors) in 0510 design (EIA 0204). They are suited for applications involving Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) and other automated driving technologiesÂ
The miniature components have voltages between 4 V and 50 V and can cover a capacitance range from 47 nF to 1 µF.Â
In contrast to conventional MLCCs, these flip-type capacitors have connections that can be rotated through 90 degrees, producing a wider and shorter current path, which results in lower Equivalent Series Inductance (ESL) and Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR) values, and thus lower impedances.
Delivers increased compute
Since applications (such as ADAS) require a high-computing power, the ICs used for this purpose need to offer even more functions, which means that a growing number of de-coupling MLCCs are required for noise suppression. At the same time, the increasing trend toward space-saving designs calls for high-efficiency components for noise suppression.
But thanks to the new capacitors, noise suppression and decoupling can be achieved along with a reduction in the number of MLCCs required.Â
All types of the new series are qualified under AEC-Q200. Volume production has begun for noise suppression and decoupling of supply lines for automotive electronic control units (ECUs).
In future, TDK plans to develop even greater capacitance values, so that it can extend the product range and serve even more automotive applications.
