Image processing is a method to perform some operations on an image, to either enhance the image or to extract some useful information from it. It is a type of signal processing with an image as input and output in the form of an image or characteristics/features associated with that image. Nowadays, image processing, and digital image processing at that is among rapidly growing technologies. It forms core research area within engineering and computer science disciplines too.
There are two types of methods used for image processing namely, analogue and digital image processing. Analogue image processing is applicable for hard copies like printouts and photographs. Image analysts use various fundamentals of interpretation while using these visual techniques. A digital image is a representation of a two-dimensional image as a finite set of digital values, called picture elements or pixels.
Digital image processing
DIP is the use of various algorithms to perform image processing on digital images. DIP techniques help in manipulation of the digital images by using computers. The three general phases that all types of data have to undergo while using digital technique are pre-processing, enhancement, and display, information extraction.
What should you know?
Since DIP is a subfield of signals and systems , so it would be good if you already have some knowledge about signals and systems , but it is not necessary. But you must have some basic concepts of digital electronics.
Basic understanding of calculus, probability and differential equations is also required for better understanding. Other than this, basic programming skills on any of the popular languages such as C++, Java, or MATLAB should also help.
Upon completion of the presentation you will be able to understand:
- What is a digital image?
- What is digital image processing?
- History of digital image processing
- Examples of digital image processing
- Key stages in digital image processing
- Face detection
